Volume III, Issue IV June 2008
Hey Coast City Ballet dancers
and families,
Some of you know me and some of you
may not, so allow me to introduce
myself. My name is Hayley Kessler and I
was a Junior member of Coast City
Ballet last year. Unfortunately, I moved
to Colorado last June, away from all the
wonderfully talented and beautiful
people at CCB. However, I did not write
this to talk about myself, because I
would bore you to death, I am here to
talk about something that I am certain
many of you already know: the miracle
that is Coast City Ballet.
Martha Graham said “Great dancers are
not great because of their technique
comfortable at my old studio and I heard
many horror stories about studios where
the teachers were mean and the
dancers hated each other. However, I
was more than pleasantly surprised to
find that CCB was very far from that.I
know and hope many others will
discover, that CCB is more than just a
place to stretch your legs and learn a
few techniques. It is a place to grow not
only as a dancer, but also as a person
because it fosters and encourages
open, honest, and respectful
communication. This does not mean
that we are all perfect and get along
perfectly all of the time. But when
disagreements arise and
miscommunications occur, they are
handled with the same grace and
elegance expected on the dance floor.
I have been in Colorado for almost a
year now, and I have not yet joined
another studio. Not because I lost
interest in dancing, but because there is
really only one place my dancing feet
belong - and that is at 9596 Hamilton
Ave. Huntington Beach, California with
the exceptionally beautiful dancers
there.

they are great because of their
passion.” Passion is something that
comes from the heart, and from the soul
of a person. This is why you will not find
a place with more passion for dance
and the will to share the experience and
magic of dance than Coast City Ballet.
Coast City Ballet is not great because it
has exceptional dancers- which it does
have. It is great because it has
exceptional people.
I was welcomed into the company not
only with open arms, but also with open
hearts, that is a rare occurrence
anywhere. At first, I was very reluctant to
switch studios because I was

A parent’s “Pointe”
A Reluctant Dance Dad
Growing up in Texas, well-schooled
in the traditional athletic pursuits of
that region (football, baseball, &
basketball),
this performing art thing
took some getting used to. But with
two daughters, I had a lot of practice.
First with Allison and now with Lauren,
who is currently cast as Snow
White in the upcoming performance
of “SnowWhite and the Seven
Dwarfs”. Precious time once spent
playing with Dad is now spent in
dance classes, rehearsals, and
performances.
At first I was reluctant to
get involved, wishing for more balance
in her activities. My friend
Gary, whose daughter Kelsey also
dances at Pacific Dance Center
(PDC), wrote previously in this
space, “…we realize our daughters
may go, but will always come back
to us.” Will they, I wonder? Time
seems to be moving so quickly, and
they’re growing up so fast. But PDC
offered me a way to reconnect. First,
with our entire family in the Coast
City Ballet’s rendition of “The
Nutcracker”;
then, with an incredible
family trip to Europe where we
(CCB) dominated the “Barcelona
my wonderful teachers, Miss Clara,
Mr. Charles, and Miss Danielle, for
all of the support and helpful hints
that they give me. I would also like
to thank Jesus Christ for giving me
this ability, because I would definitely
not be here if it weren’t for
him. I would also like to thank my
dad, for diving into all of his acting
roles with me; my mom, for encouraging
me to keep going, (because,
believe it or not, at one point, I was
going to quit dance, but she wouldn’t
let me). And also to my sister for
always being there for me with inspiration
and support. So, in a nutshell,
thanks to everyone! I love you all,
and will see you after the show. (P.S.
shout outs to ALL of my friends,
both onstage, and off. I love you
guys so much! Peace out a-town!)

Student’s Corner
Hey everyone! My name is Lauren
and I am 15 years old. I have been
dancing at PDC for as long as I can
remember. I loved growing up at this
studio and now it feels like a second
home to me. Everyday, I look forward
to coming to the studio and
seeing all of the smiling faces. To
International Dance Competition”;
later with Gary and the other dads in
the annual Father-Daughter dance;
and now in “SnowWhite”, where
PDC-CCB Founder and Director,
Clara D’Autilia, has given me yet
another opportunity to “expose” my
more sensitive side as the
“Huntsman”. Not only has PDC
given me a way to stay involved with
my kids, it has given our entire family
many wonderful memories and
many new friends. Our family has
been blessed by Clara, Ms. Aly and
the entire PDC/CCB family. My
daughter Lauren? What started as a
whirling dervish of pink bubblegum,
has transformed into 5 foot 9 inches
of solid grace, beauty and muscle; an
athlete by any measure. See you at
the show!

All in all, I would
