Viva el Baile!
Barcelona Dance Grand Prix

During spring break, Coast City
Ballet performed at the Dance Grand
Prix in the Costa Brava, Spain. Twelve
dancers and their families flew to Spain
to participate in this terrific event. The
dancers faced more than 150 dance
schools from around the world and
brought home a top-ranking trophy.

Coast City Ballet presented two dances
from its repertoire: the contemporary
piece “Breathe Me” and the new
version of the contemporary ballet
“PerSempre.” Both of these brilliantly
choreographed dances commanded
enthusiastic ovations from the entire
audience. The dancers’ passion and the
company’s solidity won Coast City
Ballet a 3rd-Prize trophy – we are all
very proud!

While the dancers worked hard rehear-
sing, their families toured around the
Costa Brava and took Spain by storm.
On their well deserved day off, the
dancers joined their families and tou-
red Barcelona. It is a beautiful city,
both modern and old, with many
wonderful sights to see.

Some dancers and their families were
able to visit France before meeting up
with the rest of the group in Spain.
Others went on to Italy for a few days
after the competition in Spain ended.
Although the trip required a lot of
resources, time, and effort, it was very
rewarding. Whether they toured through
another country or not, everyone who
went to Spain had an incredible
experience.
Traveling to Europe to dance involved a
great deal of hard work and careful
planning for all of us. But in the end,
everything was worthwhile. Thank you,
Miss Clara and Miss Aly for the
wonderful memories that the Dance
Grand Prix in Spain created for
everyone.

Student’s Corner
I was eight years old when I first
started taking classes at Pacific Dance
Center (PDC). I was very nervous, but I
quickly made many friends. The
the past two years. I also auditioned
for and was accepted as a member of
Coast City Ballet. We   recently went to
Spain to compete  internationally. We
placed third in our division and won a
huge trophy. Pacific Dance Center is a
wonderful place to dance and I hope I
will dance there with all of my friends
for a long time.

A parent’s  “Pointe”

Recently, dance instructor extra-
ordinaire Clara D’Autilia asked me
to write about my experiences
with Pacific Dance Center and our
up-coming performance. For several
weeks, five of us dads and our
daughters practiced a dance for
the June 16th performance at
Millikan High School. We have
been dancing to an old Jackson 5
tune titled “I’ll be There.” As you
might imagine, by the title, it is
really a two-way dedication
between the fathers and their daughters.

This has been an incredible experience;
one that I will always cherish. There
were times when I stood on stage
watching my daughter Kelsey dance,
and I became teary-eyed.    Kelsey is 17
years old now and has a very hectic
schedule as most kids her age do.
Between school, friends, and preparing
for college, I don’t get to visit and “play”
with her as I did when she was little.
enjoy the spotlight that they so richly
deserve)    reminds me of those
precious times.

This is a beautiful moment in our lives
that we are able to share.   Dancing has
brought us all closer  together. When I
see Eric and Elise trying to time their
jump, Hannah spinning just right around
Brian, Doug lifting Lauren, or Larry and
Raquel doing chaînés, we all realize
There have been many special moments
that the other fathers and  I have been
privileged with. When Kelsey was young,
she used to get about 100 feet away and
run as fast as she could into my arms.
When we dance, I’m back in that place, and
she is running into my arms again.

that our daughters may go, but
will  always come back to us. It
reminds us dads of the impor-
tance of our  relationships with
our  daughters.  Just a couple
of days  ago, a friend and
parent   of another dancer at
the  studio came up to me at
the grocery store and said,
“You made my daughter  cry.”
I was taken aback.  She then
told me that the father
-daughter
dance was so sweet, that her
daughter,  while watching, was
brought to tears.
